Lorazepam (brand name Ativan) is a benzodiazepine medication. It is used to treat anxiety disorders, trouble sleeping, active seizures including status epilepticus, alcohol withdrawal, and chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting.

Method of application and dosage
Inside, 1 mg of Lorazepam 2-3 times a day. For improvement of a falling asleep - on 1-2 mg for 30 mines before a dream. In the expressed state of anxiety and excitation, the dose should be increased to 4-6 mg / day (not more).
For premedication appoint an hour before the surgery, adults - 2.5-5 mg, children - 0.05 mg / kg. Cancellation should occur gradually because of the risk of developing a convulsive syndrome. In elderly and weakened patients, the dose should not exceed 2 mg / day. The duration of the initial course is no more than 1 week.
In patients with renal or hepatic insufficiency, lower doses of lorazepam are used.

Side effects that can occur with long-term Ativan use and abuse include: drowsiness, visual disturbance, memory loss, depression, nausea or vomiting, a heachache, hallucinations, violent mood changes, aggressive behavior ,suicidal tendencies.
One of the most dangerous side effects of prolonged Ativan use is seizures. While Ativan may be prescribed to help alleviate seizures, the way that it affects the brain can actually cause seizures if it is used excessively.
